Pakistan all-rounder and ex-captain Mohammad Hafeez has decided to retire. He will officially retire after holding a press conference on 3 January. Mohammad Hafeez's international career lasted for 18 years and during this time he accomplished a lot of success in all three formats. He is one of the successful players of Pakistan. His last tournament on the international stage was the 2021 T20 World Cup. In this, he had landed for the last time in the match against Australia in the semi-finals. However, he will continue to play franchise cricket and will be a part of T20 leagues around the world.
Hafeez had retired from Test cricket in December 2018. At the same time, after the 2019 World Cup, the selectors had distanced themselves from his selection in the ODI format. Since then, he was a contender to be selected in the team only for the T20 format. Due to this Hafeez had said that the T20 World of 2020 would be his last international tournament. But due to Corona, this World Cup went ahead till 2021, so Hafeez's time also increased. He made his international debut in April 2003 in an ODI against Zimbabwe. This was followed by a Test debut in August 2003 and a T20 debut in August 2006.
Mohammad Hafeez played the last Test in December 2018, the last ODI in July 2019 and the last T20 in November 2021. He was also part of the Pakistan team of the 2021 T20 World Cup. 41-year-old Hafeez scored 6614 runs in 218 ODIs with the help of 11 centuries and took 139 wickets. At the same time, in 55 Tests, he scored 3652 runs with 10 centuries and took 53 wickets. In 119 T20 matches, he scored 2514 runs and took 61 wickets. Hafeez was very brilliant in batting as well as in bowling. He also started the innings in bowling several times. Also, his fielding was amazing.
Mohammad Hafeez won 32 player of matches in his career. In this case, only Shahid Afridi (43), Wasim Akram (39) and Inzamam-ul-Haq (33) are ahead of them in Pakistan players. Hafeez was the player of the series nine times and was jointly on top for Pakistan along with Imran Khan, Inzamam and Waqar Younis. Mohammad Hafeez is the only Pakistan player who has played all except one T20 World Cup from 2007 to 2021. During this, he was also a part of the team that won the World Cup in 2009. Also, under his captaincy, the team reached the semi-finals in 2012. He captained 29 matches in the T20 format and won 18.
