Questions are being raised on Virat Kohli's captaincy after the defeat in the World Test Championship (WTC) final. Some fans feel that Virat should not captain in all three formats and split captaincy should be promoted. But former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina wants Virat to be given some time.
Raina also took a pinch of Virat. He said that people are expecting the ICC trophy from Virat, but he has not even won the IPL trophy till now. They just need to start over.
Raina said in an interview to News 24 Sports that if Virat gets time, he will shine more. He is the number 1 captain. Virat's record shows that he has achieved a lot in his career. He is also the number 1 batsman. Let them start from the beginning. Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina were part of Team India which won the ODI World Cup in 2011.
Raina said that there are 2-3 World Cups to be held in the next few years. This includes 2 T20 World Cups and one ODI World Cup. Reaching the final is not easy. Sometimes by reaching the finals, you miss out on a few things. Raina said that in the WTC final, Team India lost not because of the weather conditions but because of poor batting.
Raina said that the senior batsmen included in the team will have to take responsibility. Regarding the fans getting angry with the team, he said that we are not chokers. We have proven ourselves in 1983, 2007, and 2011 World Cups. Our players are working hard.
Raina said that Virat has the ability to change the game. We should respect the new style of the team. I think in the next 12 to 16 months we will have the ICC trophy. So give the team some time. Virat will definitely be successful in bringing the trophy.
Virat had overtaken former captain, MS Dhoni, in the WTC final. Virat has now become the captain to lead India in most Test matches. He has captained Team India in 61 Tests so far. Dhoni had captained India in 60 matches. Virat Kohli is already the most successful captain in terms of getting Team India to win most Tests.
Virat has so far led India to victory in 36 Test matches. Lost 15 and drew 10 Tests. The record of most wins was also in the name of Dhoni before Virat. Dhoni had led Team India to victory in 27 out of 60 Tests.
Virat Kohli is fourth in the world in terms of scoring the most runs as a captain. He has scored 5,449 runs in 61 Test matches as a captain. In this case, Graeme Smith of South Africa is in the first place. He has scored 8,659 runs in 109 matches. Australia's Allan Border is second with 6623 runs from 93 matches. Ricky Ponting (6,542 runs in 77 Tests) is third.
Team India has played 3 ICC tournaments after Dhoni stepped down as captain from all forms of cricket in 2016. All these were played under the captaincy of Virat. Gautam Gambhir has captained 129 matches and won 71 matches. Rohit captained in 123 matches and won the team in 74 matches. Whereas Virat has captained in 132 matches and Bengaluru could win only 60 matches out of this. Virat is the captain of RCB since 2011.
