Heavy rainfall in Nepal and Bihar over the past two days has raised the threat of flooding in 13 districts of the state.
The Water Resources Department and the Disaster Management Department have warned that due to continuous heavy rains in Nepal, water levels in several rivers in Bihar, including the Gandak, Kosi, and Mahananda, are expected to rise over the next 24 hours.
The Disaster Management Department has issued a flood warning for 13 districts in Bihar. Authorities in West Champaran, East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Muzaffarpur, Gopalganj, Siwan, Saran, Vaishali, Patna, Jehanabad, Madhubani, and Bhojpur have been advised to stay alert.
In Sheohar, the water level of the Bagmati River has risen significantly, increasing pressure on the embankments.
According to reports, rivers in districts bordering Nepal are overflowing. Water has started entering the low-lying areas of Narkatiaganj, Gopalganj, Saharsa, and other regions.
Authorities in Saharsa, Birpur, Supaul, and nearby districts, along with those responsible for the embankments, are on high alert.
Residents living near the embankments are being urged to move to higher ground.
Reports indicate that the water level of the Gandak River in Gopalganj is rising rapidly due to heavy rainfall in Nepal. Floodwaters have started entering low-lying areas.
Meanwhile, District Magistrate Mohammad Maqsood Alam inspected the safety of Sattar Ghat, Zero Mile, and Saran embankments. The DM has appealed to residents of low-lying areas near the embankments to move to higher ground and take shelter in community kitchens set up by the administration. The district administration is fully prepared to handle the flood situation.
The DM stated that the water discharged from the Valmikinagar barrage will reach Gopalganj in the next 20 to 24 hours. Therefore, the administration is on high alert and fully prepared.
The control room has been activated, and all COs, BDOs, and station in-charges have been assigned to monitor the embankments.
