Representatives of China's restricted app can present their side to the committee. They have to prove that Indian users' data is not being sent to Chinese servers.
The committee will examine the data-sharing practices of these apps in detail. These include top social media platforms such as Tik Tok, Halo, and WeChat. App officials like Tik Tok, Bigo Live, and Likee said they would cooperate with the government in the investigation and have started the process.
The committee will consist of officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Electronics and IT, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Law and Law. Sanjay Bahl, director general of CERT-In, the country's nodal agency for Internet security, will also be a part of it.
A senior official said the ban was necessary at a time when clashes with China are increasingly in view of threats to national security and public order. He said that China's apps have been banned under the Emergency provisions of the law. It was feared that some of these were being used to spy on Indians.
China on Tuesday issued a statement expressing displeasure over the issue. Chinese Embassy lecturer Ji Rong said that India's actions were in violation of WTO rules. He said it was also against the interests of consumers and market competition. Local employment in India will also be affected.
Government officials, however, expressed confidence that China's decision to ban the app would meet the test of the law. An official said that this is an interim order and all these provisions are in law.
Nikhil Gandhi, head of Tik Tok in India, said the company had been asked to meet with government officials to present their case. He said that Tik took compliance with all the provisions of Indian law and had not shared the data of Indian users with any foreign government. The company will continue this policy even further.
