The Supreme Court has directed to implement the One Nation One Ration Card scheme in all states and union territories by July 31. In 2019, this scheme was started as a pilot project in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat. It was to be implemented across the country by June 1, 2020, but due to Corona, it has not been implemented yet.

However, due to this corona, its need was felt more strongly. Had this scheme been implemented, then the problems of migrant labourers could have been reduced considerably. In view of this, the Supreme Court has said that every state must implement the scheme of the One Nation One Ration Card by July 31 so that every migrant labourer can get his ration from any part of the country.

What is the One Nation One Ration Card Scheme?

You must have heard about One Nation One Tax i.e. GST. After the introduction of GST, different taxes in the country were merged into one and now only one tax is levied in the whole of India. Similarly, now every state has different ration cards.

Under the One Nation One Ration Card, all these ration cards will be linked through a central system. Then you will get this facility that from any ration shop in the country you will be able to take ration through a single ration card. That is, even if your ration card is from Bhopal, you will get a ration from it in Delhi as well.

In 2019, Union Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan started this scheme in 4 states as a pilot project. These states were – Telangana, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. Gradually the rest of the states were also included in this scheme. In January 2020, Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan had announced that by June 1, 2020, this scheme would be implemented across the country. However, so far this has not happened.

How do you get ration now?

The government issues ration cards to the poor to provide them ration at a subsidized rate. This ration card is linked with your nearest government ration shop, from where you can get your ration. The problem in this whole process is that you can take ration only from the shop which has been set in your ration card.

For example, if your ration card is made of Subhash Nagar, Bhopal, then you will get your ration only from the fair price shop of Subhash Nagar. That is, in the area where your ration card is made, you will get a ration.

What will change after the implementation of the scheme?

After the implementation of the scheme, it will happen that you will be able to take your ration from any fair price shop in the country. For this, you have to do biometric verification through Aadhaar. That is, your ration card may be made of Bhopal, but you can also take your ration from any shop in Delhi.

So do you have to get a new ration card made?

No. The ration card that you already have will be linked with your Aadhaar. After this your ration card will be linked through a central system. The system will have data of ration cardholders and fair price shops across the country.

What will change in ration shops after the scheme is implemented?

nothing more. At present, if this scheme is not applicable in your state, then you were given a ration by making a manual entry on a register through a ration card. After the implementation of the scheme, you will be given a ration through a rationed number or Aadhar card. Every ration shop will have a biometric scanner, in which your fingerprints will be taken. After verification, you will be given a ration.
