The Bharatiya Janata Party, after its inception and earlier its leaders, fought fiercely from the road to the House.  The result of this struggle is that today BJP is the largest party in the country.  BJP first campaign for the complete merger of Jammu and Kashmir with India.  At that time Jammu and Kashmir had a separate flag and separate constitution.

But Shyam Prasad Mukherjee opposed setting out on a trip to Jammu and Kashmir in 1953 without obtaining a permit.  Also Shyam Prasad was arrested and put under house arrest as soon as he arrived, where Shyam Prasad died on 23 June 1953 under mysterious circumstances.  After that, the leadership of Jan Sangh came in the hands of Deendayal Upadhyay and then Atal Bihari Bajpayee and LK Advani.  The Jan Sangh won three seats in the 1952 Lok Sabha elections.  Until 1967 the Jan Sangh remained in a minority in the Parliament.  The agenda and demands of the Jan Sangh included ending rights to all citizens of the country, ban cow slaughter, abolition of special status given to Jammu and Kashmir.  By 1967, the Jan Sangh, along with some other parties, strengthened its position in some states of the country.

In 1975, when Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed Emergency in the country, Indira started a forceful movement against it.  Due to which the ruling party put thousands of activists in jail.  It also included big leaders of the Jan Sangh.  General elections were held in 1977 after the Emergency ended.  This was the time when some small parties formed the Janata Party together, including the Jan Sangh.  Its original objective was to defeat Indira Gandhi in elections.  The party was successful in achieving this objective and formed a government under Morarji Desai.  Atal Bihari Bajpayee was made the foreign minister in this government.  But this government fell after Morarji Desai's resignation even before Morarji completed his work.  In 1980, the country once again stood at the mouth of the general election.
