The border dispute between the two states has been going on for decades. The controversy that erupted this week has taken a new form. Violence broke out in the border areas of these states on Monday, in which six Assam policemen were killed and several others were injured. Both sides have accused each other of inciting violence.

Home Minister also visited three days ago

This dispute started between the police and citizens of both the states regarding the removal of encroachments. After this the situation worsened and the attack started with sticks and stones from both the sides. Home Minister Amit Shah recently visited Assam. The violence took place two days after his visit.

Controversy going on for 49 years

  • Mizoram came into existence as a Union Territory in 1972 and a State in 1987. Since then Mizoram has a border dispute with Assam.
  • The Barak Valley districts of Assam share a 164-km-long border with Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi and three districts of Mizoram, Aizawl, Kolasib and Mamit.
  • Earlier, the area which was known as Lushai Hills in Cachar district of Assam was given the status of Mizoram.
  • The Lushai Hills and Manipur were demarcated through a notification of 1933.
  • Mizoram believes that this demarcation should be based on the notification of 1875.
  • Mizo leaders say that the Mizo society was not consulted in 1933. So they are against this notification.
  • On the other hand the Government of Assam follows the same notification of 1933.
