Six-time Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Congress leader Virbhadra Singh passed away on Thursday at the age of 87. He was ill for a long time. He breathed his last at 3:40 am at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) Hospital in Shimla. Here he was admitted for about two months. On Monday, he had difficulty in breathing, after which he was put on a ventilator.
His report came positive for the first time on 12 April and for the second time on 11 June. A day earlier on Wednesday, IGMC Medical Superintendent Dr. Janak Raj had said that Virbhadra Singh's condition is critical but remains stable. Virbhadra Singh was born on 23 June 1934. His father Padam Singh was the king of Bushahr princely state.
Virbhadra Singh won the Lok Sabha elections for the first time in 1962 from the Mahasu seat. After this, he was also elected to the Lok Sabha in 1967, 1971, 1980 and 2009. Virbhadra used to contest assembly elections from Rohru seat earlier. Later, when Rohru seat was reserved, he contested from Shimla Rural seat in 2012. In 2017, he left this seat for son Vikramaditya Singh and himself contested from Arki. Presently he was MLA from Arki seat.
Virbhadra Singh served as the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh for the first time from 1983 to 1985, for the second time from 1985 to 1990, for the third time from 1993 to 1998, for the fourth time in 1998, for the fifth time from 2003 to 2007 and for the sixth time from 2012 to 2017.
He was also the Union Steel Minister in the UPA government. He also held the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. Prior to this, he was the Union Minister of State for Tourism and Aviation in Indira Gandhi's government from December 1976 to 1977. He was the Union Minister of State for Industry from 1982 to 1983.
