Maldives Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid has been elected as new president of the 76th UNGA with overwhelming support. During the voting, he received 143 votes out of 191 ballots cast, while Afghanistan's former Foreign minister Zalmai Rassoul got 48 votes.
Meanwhile, the post of president of UNGA held on an annual basis, rotated among various regional groupings. Shahid will preside over the 76th General Assembly for 2021-22 term. This is the first time Maldives will occupy the office of PGA. Meanwhile, an Indian diplomat at the UN said, "FM Shahid is eminently qualified to hold the office of PGA, with vast diplomatic experience and strong credentials, especially in the multilateral forum."
On the other hand, India has been elected to the United Nations Economic and Social Council for the period 2022-24. At the same time, India elected in the Asia-Pacific States category along with Afghanistan. Kazakhstan and Oman in the elections held on June 7. For this, the Ambassador of India to UN TS Tirumurti thanks all Member States of the United Nations for their vote of confidence in India for the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
Meanwhile, ECOSOC is at the heart of the United Nations Development System that brings people and issues together to promote collective action for a sustainable world. It is the central forum for promoting debate and innovative thinking, building consensus on ways forward, and coordinating efforts to achieve internationally agreed goals. At the same time, India is currently serving the 2021-22 term as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.
