Supreme Court Hearing on Pegasus Spyware Case Today

The Pegasus espionage case will be heard in the Supreme Court today. The matter will be heard by a bench of Chief Justice NV Ramanna and Justice Surya Kant. Petitions have been filed in this case by senior journalists Enram and Sasikumar, CPM's Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas, and advocate ML Sharma. The opposition's ruckus continues in Parliament over the investigation into the Pegasus case. Due to the uproar of the opposition, the proceedings of the Parliament are being adjourned repeatedly.

Licensed Pegasus Spyware

The petitions state that large-scale espionage is being conducted using military-grade spyware. Due to which many fundamental rights of the people are being violated. This is an attempt to infiltrate, attack, and destabilize independent institutions in a way, so it needs to be heard at the earliest. It has also been said in the petition that if the government or any of its agencies have licensed Pegasus spyware and used it in any way, then the Centre should be directed to disclose this thorough investigation.

What is the matter?

Significantly, the International Association of Media Organizations has revealed that a large number of businessmen, including two Union ministers of India, more than 40 journalists, three opposition leaders, and a judge, through Israel's spy software sold only to government agencies. And more than 300 mobile numbers of rights activists have been hacked. However, the government has denied the allegations related to the surveillance of certain people at its level.

The government said that there is no solid basis for this or there is no truth related to it. The Pegasus espionage case will be heard by a bench of Chief Justice NV Ramanna and Justice Surya Kant. Senior journalists Enram and Sasikumar, CPM's Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas, and lawyer ML Sharma have filed petitions in this matter.
