Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia defeated Kazakhstan's Daulet Niyazbekov to win the bronze medal in men's freestyle 65kg wrestling at Tokyo Olympics. With this, India has equaled the medal record of the most successful 2012 London Olympics. The Indian contingent won 6 medals in London. Meanwhile, Punia's father said, 'He fulfilled my dream. This is gold medal for me. He told me that he will not come back empty handed.'
Wrestler Bajrang Punia, who came out of the village, showed his strength in the Tokyo Olympics, In the second half too, Bajrang played brilliantly and took 2 points in the first few minutes to make the score 4-0, and soon thereafter took 2 more points to make it 6-0. After this, there was no chance left for the Kazakhstan wrestler to return. Gaining two more points in the last minute, Bajrang reduced his score gap to 8-0.
Meanwhile, PM Modi spoke to Bajrang Punia and congratulated him on winning the Bronze medal. He lauded Bajrang for his determination and hard work that has led to this accomplishment. On the other President Ramnath Kovind tweeted, "A special moment for Indian wrestling! Congratulations to Bajrang Punia for winning the Bronze at Tokyo 2020. You have distinguished yourself as an outstanding wrestler with untiring efforts, consistency and tenacity over the years. Every Indian shares the joy of your success!"
Daulet Niyazbekov is one of the most decorated wrestlers from Kazakhstan. He is a two-time World Championships medalist, which includes a silver at the 2019 edition. After winning his first bout, Niyazbekov was dominated in his quarterfinal by Aliyev. He lost 9-1. He also ranked number three in the wolrd in this weight category.
