New Delhi: Recently, news came that many people who went to Israel turned out to be Covid-19 positive at Delhi Airport. All these people were from Manipur. The batch was more than 250 but the coronavirus test report of 40 people came positive. In such a situation, the question arose that who are these people who are absolutely sure that Israel will give them citizenship?
All these people going to Israel come from the Bnei Menashe community. More than 10 thousand people of this community live in Mizoram and Manipur. This community claims to be one of the lost tribes (Menashe) of Israel. All follow the customs of Judaism. People of this community want to settle in Israel. They believe that their ancestors are from there and they want to return to their land.
Some Israeli NGOs are trying to bring back their lost tribes. Under the same, 160 people of the Bnei Menashe community reached Israel on Monday. Total 275 was to go to Israel but 40 came positive. A total of 115 people who came in contact with them was detained in India. To read more about these people's Israeli connections
According to Israeli law, citizenship there is obtained in four ways:
The way to Israel is open to every Jew. The Law of Return (1950) entitles every Jew, wherever they are, the right to come to Israel and become an Israeli citizen. Legally, a 'Jew' is one whose mother has been Jewish or has adopted Judaism and does not profess any other religion. The citizenship of such people can be valid from the day they step into Israel.
After 1970, there was little change in the law. Now the children and grandchildren of Jews can also become citizens of Israel. This does not include those who were Jewish and later converted voluntarily.
