The hearing on the review petition of Akshay Thakur, one of the culprits of the Nirbhaya case, has been completed and the Supreme Court will pronounce its verdict today. A bench headed by Justice Bhanumathi has to decide on this petition. The lawyer for the guilty party has argued one after the other in the court. He pleaded that due to citing pollution and bad air in Delhi they should not be hanged. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that under no circumstances can this crime be forgiven.
A bench of Justices Bhanumati, Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice AS Bopanna reserved the verdict after hearing the arguments of both the parties. During the debate, Akshay's lawyer AP Singh pleaded not to hang his client.
Advocate SG Tushar Mehta, appearing for the government, said that the trial court sentenced all the pleas to death after examining the evidence, which was also considered by the Supreme Court to be correct. This crime is so serious that even God cannot forgive it, which can only carry the death penalty.
The convict's lawyer was given 30 minutes
Earlier on Tuesday, the Chief Justice gave the lawyer 30 minutes to present an argument on the review plea of convict Akshay Thakur. Even today, a three-judge bench gave 30 minutes to the convict's lawyer. Thakur's lawyer gave a strange argument on Tuesday and said there was no evidence against my client. Putting all the blame on the media, he said that it was the media that campaigned against my client.
CJI disengages itself from the back
The hearing on the review petition of Akshay Thakur, one of the 4 convicts in the Nirbhaya incident in Delhi on Tuesday, was adjourned for Tuesday. Now the matter is being heard today. The CJI said that the new constitution bench would hear the case and the bench would be set up at 10.30 am on Wednesday itself. The nephew of the Chief Justice had pleaded on behalf of Nirbhaya in the case, so he recused himself from the bench.
