The rape victim who set herself on fire outside the office of Superintendent of Police (SP), Unnao, died in Kanpur hospital on Saturday night. The woman (23) had alleged that the police was not taking action against her accused Avadhesh Singh on the complaint.
The self-immolating girl claimed that the accused had promised to marry her, but later refused to accept the relationship. A case of rape was registered against Awadhesh Singh, but later he got anticipatory bail from the court. The police had filed a charge sheet against the accused.
The victim was on ventilator since Saturday morning
The girl was over 80 percent burnt and on 16 December she was admitted to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital in Kanpur. Doctors said that the woman's stomach and breathing system had swollen and she was on ventilator since Saturday morning. Significantly, the woman went to the Unnao SP office on December 16 and poured kerosene oil on herself and set her on fire. She entered the office surrounded by flames.
Was admitted to district hospital
The policemen present in the SP office immediately extinguished the fire and took the woman to the district hospital, from where she was referred to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital in Kanpur. According to Unnao Superintendent of Police Vikrant Veer, the woman had a love affair with Awadhesh for many years. On October 2, the woman had filed a case against Avadhesh accusing him of sexually abusing her.
